Howard U. is not the only HBCU out there first of all. There are quite a number of excellent institutions to choose from. Most HBCU's are in urban areas, but that has nothing to do with your education.
I attended Jackson State University, and no I did not have a luxury room or a surburban setting, but I got a great education and professors who truly cared about my success.They encouraged me, gave me excellent advice, and were truly committed to seeing that I succeeded.
My sister made the mistake you did and worried about her surroundings and ended up at a University where she had to deal with racist students and professors. She was overlooked in the classroom and basically treated as an inferior. She finally woke up and transferred to Tennessee State University and told me then that she understood what I meant about the comfortable feeling, warmth of the college environment, and being in classes with professors who encouraged her growth and success.
So don't get caught up the exterior. I guarantee the best experience is the HBCU experience!!!
