I think you should base your decision on your personality. I attended Hampton for undergrad and Howard for law school. Because Hampton is not near a metropolitan area, people were extremely involved in the school and developing their friendships. There were a lot of house parties and just hanging out. At Hampton there is a lot of tradition and some students can't put up with the curfew and dress code. As a freshman, you are on curfew for the first three months. I believe you have to be in the dorms by 1AM. On the weekends you can sign out and stay at someone's place off campus. The administration decides whether to lift the curfew based upon the midterm grades. Again, a lot of people feel like "I'm a grown ass woman, I'm not putting up with a curfew." Honestly, some of the best memories from Hampton running back to the dorm to beat curfew and sneaking in and out of dorms. The dress code is not that bad. It's basically, don't dress like a hoochie in class. No middriffs or short shorts in class. Men can't wear there hats.

You do not have any of those restrictions at Howard, it is a more liberal school. You come and go as you please and dress anyway you want.

So ask yourself, do you need a structured environment? Can you put up with restricitons? How are your social skills? Would you rather experience city life or be more bound to a campus?

I hope this helpful insight.
